SaunaLife CL4G Review: The Compact Cube With Full Recline

The material spec on the SaunaLife CL4G is identical to the rest of the SaunaLife cube lineup, meaning that dropping down from the SaunaLife CL5G to the CL4G, for example, isn’t a downgrade in build quality. You get the same 1.7" (42mm) thermally modified Nordic Spruce staves, knotless Thermo-Aspen benches, tempered bronze glass front pre-installed in its frame, and shingled roof with drip edges over a hexagonal Thermo-Spruce structure. What you get instead is a more compact footprint with a depth of 49.2" vs 63" found in the CL5G.

Inside, SaunaLife pairs Thermo-Spruce walls with Thermo-Aspen benches and backrests. Aspen has virtually no knots and therefore no resin. Resin pockets in cedar (a more common sauna wood species in North America) can occasionally blister and seep sap when temperatures are exceed 175°F. In a smaller sauna like the CL4G (a 138 cubic foot room), you are sitting much closer to the walls. Thermo-Aspen also stays noticeably cooler to the touch than cedar at peak temperature. The trade-off is that aspen has little aromatic profile at all. If the strong aromatic "sauna smell" is a core part of what you’re looking for, the CL4G will not deliver it. Though, many owners have told us the more neutral profile is exactly what they were after.

The glass arrives pre-installed in the frame rather than loose in the crate, which is a meaningful build advantage over competing cube kits that require you to seal and align the pane yourself. It also improves long-term weather sealing, since the seal is factory-made rather than a bead you ran on a weekend.

The CL4G's bench runs 76" (six feet four inches) across the full width of the cabin with a depth of 17.7". A six-foot bather can lie down flat in the hottest part of the room. In a cabin whose exterior footprint is only 49.2" deep, we think this is quite exceptional.

The smaller CL3G's bench is only 49.2" long so you can sit on it, and you can prop yourself at an angle, but you won’t be able to stretch out. The CL4G is the first cube in the SaunaLife lineup where full recline becomes possible, and it costs $1,000 less than the CL5G, which offers the same 76" bench, but adds an L bench. If reclining is your priority and group bathing is not, the CL4G is the most efficient investment. This way you can use the extra $1,000 towards your sauna heater, which is sold separately.

Interior height on the CL4G clears 74.8", so anyone under roughly 6' 2" can stand comfortably. The full-glass front tastefully floods the cabin with light and makes the space feel considerably larger than 41.3" of depth suggests. The bronze tint reduces UV and softens the interior light to a warm amber, which changes daytime sessions more than one might expect.

SaunaLife treats ventilation as an intentional design feature rather than a box to check. The CL4G features a gravity-fed, and entirely passive, ventilation system: lower intake vents draw fresh, oxygen-rich air in at floor level, and the roof geometry combined with elevated exhaust vents pulls stale heat out through the top. The result is a natural chimney effect with no fans, no powered air handling, and no moving parts to fail. Rounded interior corners are shaped to keep air moving rather than retain pockets of stale air.

This matters because poor ventilation is what produces stale, oxygen-depleted, headache-inducing sessions. Good ventilation gives you even heat distribution without hot or cold spots, a faster sweat response, and longer comfortable session length. In a smaller cabin like the CL4G the effect is amplified since there is simply less air volume to work with, so a room that circulates badly at this footprint gets uncomfortable quite fast.

On heater sizing, the CL4G's 138 cubic foot interior calls for 6-8kW. SaunaLife's own recommendation is the Harvia KIP60B at 6kW, which is rated for rooms up to 300 cubic feet and is comfortably sufficient in moderate climates. The Harvia The Wall Series 8kW, the Harvia KIP80W package, and the HUUM Drop 7.5kW are all proven pairings, and all three are worth the step up if you sauna in colder climates. One CL4G owner in California reports their HUUM Drop 7.5kW taking the cabin from 60°F to about 175°F in 15-20 minutes. Whichever heater you choose, plan ahead for the required 240V dedicated circuit.

SaunaLife markets this as a same-day build for two people. This is entirely possible if you are handy, and the conditions are perfect. However, our experience, and owner reviews, point to two days plus a third day for the electrical. Two people are required for assembly. No cutting is required for the sauna structure itself, but the felt underlay and shingles require a utility knife and several spare blades.

The thoughtful engineering does save real time compared to competing cube kits. The glass ships pre-installed in its frame, so there is no silicone application and no pane alignment. Filler staves arrive pre-cut to length. The riser-based foundation system is more forgiving than the cradle systems some competitors use.

The CL4G sits above entry-level barrel kits (~$3,500) and well below pre-assembled modular sauna packages ($25,000+). At $4,990, it is an affordable entry way into SaunaLife's Cube-Series materials and engineering with a reclining bench attached.

The honest out-the-door math is below.

The kit sticker price obscures the total commitment, and the heater is the line item that often surprises people the most (though it does provide some flexibility to select the one you want for your space). Your electrical cost can also run higher than the range above if you need a panel upgrade or a long run from the panel to the pad.

Compared against the CL5G, the $1,000 difference buys 33% more interior volume, a genuine 31.1" deep lower bench, and a side L bench. In other words, real seating for a fourth person and two-tier heat zoning. It does not buy you a longer bench or better materials. If you are a solo bather, or a couple, that $1,000 may be better spent on the heater instead.

The SaunaLife CL7G sits above all three at $7,990 for six bathers and a 10-13kW heater, if you are entertaining rather than bathing, consider this option.

Choose the CL3G if: your footprint is genuinely constrained. At 53.2" wide, it slots into spaces other saunas won’t, and it has a side bench the CL4G lacks. The tradeoff is you won’t get full recline.

Choose the CL4G if: you want to fully recline and you’re bathing alone or as a couple. It is the most economical entry to a 6' 4" bench, and its 49.2" depth fits side yards, narrow patios, and deck corners that the CL5G will not.

Choose the CL5G if: you regularly sauna with three or more people, or you and your partner want to sit at different heat levels at the same time. The deep lower bench and side L bench are what the extra $1,000 gets you.

The CL4G is the only sauna rated for three bathers, with the widest cabin (80.7") and a 76" full-recline bench that neither 1-2 person rival matches. Even adding a $1,500-2,100 6kW heater to reach heater-included parity (roughly $6,500-7,100 all-in), it lands near the Redwood Duo's price and below the heater-included Mini-Cube's $8,397. Factor in European-built quality with premium materials, the CL4G is the clear value outlier in the compact cube category.

Bottom Line

On price, capacity, glass frontage, and warranty, the SaunaLife CL4G wins outright. Consider a competing cube for a specific reason the CL4G can't serve: bundled turnkey setup plus cedar aroma and a wood-burning option.

The SaunaLife CL4G holds a 5.0 average across verified reviews on SaunaKits.com, and the pattern in those reviews is consistent: high praise for the build quality and material feel, high praise for the size-to-comfort ratio in small yards. But the assembly instructions could use improvement.

Owners describe the cabin as feeling solid and built to last, heating quickly, and fitting well in yards where a barrel sauna would have been otherwise imposing. The most telling comment we see repeatedly is that the sauna comfortably accommodates a couple, but is best when one person has it to themselves and can stretch out, which is exactly what the 76" bench is designed for.
