Questions to Ask Before You Buy an Outdoor Sauna

We’ve been doing this for decades, and a few questions always come up in the process. We invite you to connect with our customer service team for personalized support, or, you can see if we already answered your questions below!

Do I need a level concrete pad for an outdoor sauna?

Not always. You DO need a level foundation to install the sauna on, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be concrete. A lot of our customers end up installing their sauna on pavers or compacted gravel. We’ve also had lots of customers install a sauna on a reinforced deck. Barrel saunas in particular tend to be lighter and more accommodating of different installation surfaces.

Is my patio a good location for a sauna?

It’s one of the best places to install your sauna outdoors, in fact! Stone or concrete patios are very capable of handling the weight of a sauna, and they are inherently flat and they drain well. Just make sure you have access to a 240V circuit. You want a few feet of clearance between the sauna and your house (or any other combustible materials) as well.

Will I need permits to install a sauna outdoors?

It depends on local codes, but most jurisdictions treat them as accessory structures. You might have to jump through a few hoops if you have an HOA.

Where else can I put a sauna outdoors?

We see customers install their saunas near the pool, in the corner of a garden, on a deck - literally anywhere you have a flat space, ample room, and access to electricity. There are no wrong answers!

What are some of the other requirements to put a sauna outside?

Most models will need a dedicated 240V circuit, especially traditional models. You may have to set up ventilation as well if you anticipate using steam within the cabin or barrel. Other than that, just make sure your sauna is crafted from Western Red Cedar because it’s naturally resistant to rot and decay. It’ll withstand the elements for years to come!

Why do outdoor saunas cost more than indoor saunas?

They’re made from weather-resistant materials (like Western Red Cedar), and they need thicker walls with better insulation. You’re paying for protection from the elements for the most part, though.

Is an outdoor sauna really worth it?

Absolutely. You get heat therapy right from the comfort and convenience of your backyard while immersing yourself in nature. Stress relief, post-workout recovery, detoxification, better sleep - there are so many benefits. Buy an outdoor sauna online today and see what a difference it can make in your life!

How much will it cost to run my sauna outside?

Depends on your heater size and local energy rates. Traditional heaters cost more to run than their infrared counterparts, so keep that in mind as well.

How much maintenance does an outdoor sauna require?

Less than you’d think. You might want to reseal the exterior once a year, but Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and decay. Wipe down the benches after each use and make sure the roof is shedding moisture/leaves properly.

Will an outdoor sauna increase my property value?

It certainly can. Or, you could disassemble the sauna and bring it with you when you move!
